ABOUT

GlassSubterra is a London-based glass jewellery studio by artist flo yuting zhu. Made with lampworked borosilicate glass, the pieces translate hidden terrains, ruins, and nature through the metaphor of a subterranean zone. Things here are deliberately elusive, translucent, and feel discovered rather than designed. Each object is a frozen relic retrieved from the wilderness of Subterra.

The inhabitants of Subterra are often wanderers, listeners, archivists and worldbuilders—individuals who move through cultures cursively rather than straight ahead. We gravitate toward objects that carry traces of a place, temporal pauses or imagined histories. The ornament we wear signals a version of self quietly removed from everyday life.

PROCESS & MATERIAL

In my lampwork workshop, I sculpt and manipulate molten borosilicate glass over a 1200°C torch flame without premade moulds. This allows each object to carry its unique flow, texture, polish and tension through the fire. While the design stays coherent, no two pieces are the same.

Borosilicate glass is known for its strength and durability, and I always ensure my pieces are made to last and able to withstand moderate collisions. Having said that, glass remains a delicate material that requires care.

Everything is made to order or in tiny batches to reject overconsumption, and to ensure I devote sufficient time to each object or bespoke requests—feel free to reach out.
